CUMULUS BROADCASTING:

First of all, I'd like to say HELLO to everyone! Yes, I am finally updating my blog since my last post in June. I read the last post and a lot has changed since then. I was working at Froggy and an integrated marketing firm, then I got another job in Pittsburgh that didn't work out. I was hoping for something to turn up full-time at Froggy or in Pittsburgh, but nothing was open and I just realized that in order to really do what I wanted to in the broadcast industry, I had to go to Dr. B's infamous checklist for success, and I had to pack my bags! I decided to move here to Macon, Georgia with my Mom and to save up some funds since we don't make any money in this business. Anyway, while I was in Pittsburgh, I called and stalked the Operations Manger here at Cumulus. When I got here, I just drove to the station the next day and I talked to him without even having an appointment. He told me that a traffic and news position was open and I said great!

That is the awesome thing about coming from Wetminster College and taking advantage of all the opportunities i had there in the Broadcast Department. Of course, I am a DJ in my own right, but because I used my knowledge and experience from radio news at Westminster, I am versatile. So, that was open and I knew I was able to do it! I didn't have to wait for a DJ air shift to get in and get my foot in the door. Anyway, he said great, and I started within the next couple of days! So tell me my fellow classmates, does it pay off to be persistent and aggressive? I think yes!

WHAT I DO HERE:
I am officially the news and traffic reporter and anchor. But, it doesn't end there! I report, write, produce, anchor, I interview, I go to meetings, I do it all! I anchor and report for the News talk station...WMAC Newstalk 940 AM. For traffic, I call all the surrounding county dispatchers to see what's going on. Here, we just updated to the Scott 32 system. We use cool edit and TLC. It's great because besides Cool edit, the other systems are new to me, so it gives me more software that I'm getting experience in that I can add to my resume. The only people in the news department are me, my News Director, and another part-timer who is here occasionally. I do 3 newscasts a day and do wraps and actualities and readers for my News Director for the morning news. I do 4 traffic reports in the afternoon. Macon, GA fluctuates between a market 156 and a 154. Right now, it's a 154. The nice thing about being here is that I have a market 23 on my resume infront of that thanks to Froggy. The other great thing about being here is that I have experience in a lot of different areas, so I can dab into everything since it is small market radio. I do the news, yes. But, an entertainment segment on the Top 40 station is in the works, I work promotions, and I on-air for the country or AC station is in the works. And I've only benn here 2 months! See what can happen!!!!! I'm just taking advantage of everything that comes my way. I'm hoping to at some point in time get promoted to a management position cause I do think I am a very good leader. I do have to say though that I never thought I would enjoy news as much as I do. I used to think that news was the last thing I wanted to do and I now I love it! Of course you have those days when things are slow and they don't seem to be working, but I just stay positive because I know there are days like this. But, in this business, you can't let them get to you! I like it here, everyone is really nice and I'm looking forward to my opportunities growing here! I'm also looking forward to building my resume to move to the next highest market. My ultimate goal is to work in a top 30 market as a PD, News Director, or Promotions Director, and a morning show co-host! I love it all, and I can do it all! Hire me and you'll find out! :)

POP CULTURE UPDATES:
I saw two movies this past weekend. One was very good and one was very bad! I went to see History of Violence with the PD for the Top 40 station. I have to say it was very disturbing, but really really good! I recommend this one! My parents wanted me to see The Fog on Sunday and it was AWFUL! Don't go see it! What is happening to movies these days?

*Everyone knows that I am the reality show junkie! I love Laguna Beach, The Real World, So you Think you Can Dance, Girls Next Door, Taradise, The Fabulous Life on VH1, I love the 80's, Best Week Ever, What not to Wear, The Soup, Regis and Kelly, Oprah, the new Tyra Banks show, America's Next Top Model, Breaking Bonaduce, and the best reality show ever right now....MAKING THE BAND 3 Season 2! This show is on Thursday nights on MTV on the 10 spot! It's SOOOOOOOOO Good! Diddy ain't play'n either!

*What have I noticed with music this week? Madonna is back! Destiny's Child's Number one's is GREAT! I've actually been going through a country music phase lately. I've noticed that a lot of country stars are remaking old pop, rock, and even using some ghetto words in their songs! I'm really excited for where country music is headed. The country station here at Cumulus gets the most remotes and does really well in ratings. I notice that the country music audience is changing not only in Pittsburgh, but everywhere. It's getting younger, and country artists are definitely catering to the younger audience more and more by allowing the rock and pop influence in their songs. Big and Rich is a perfect example of this!

HI EVERYBODY! Well, I graduated exactly one month ago today, and everything is going great! The rest of last month Dr. B had me fill in for radio news to do the 8, 9, and noon newscasts and they all went very well! I love doing radio news! The noon newscast is always so much better than the 8 and 9 because you have so much time to gather great sound and new strories. The more I did radio news, the more I liked it, so I am looking into radio news jobs part-time at night. I just don't think I can drive that far to get there because my car is starting to die on me. There is slways a problem with it. Poor Trina! (I know, I name my cars...and I am not ashamed).

I was working with a couple temp agencies, hoping that they could get me into something that matched my skills and expertise because I don't like to not be working. I didn't work for 2 weeks and I just about went CRAZY!

I am not working at an Integrated Marketing firm called Communifax. Everyone is really nice and the atmosphere is young. I get to do all my favorite things, which is to stay busy and on task in a fun and chaotic environment and I have to meet deadlines. Right now, I am the receptionist and the proofreader. So I get to edit and proofread copy. They needed a receptionist right away, and they might be creating a new position called the marketing coordinater which I would like to apply for. That position won't be open for a couple of months, but I would like to move up in this company.

I'm starting grad school in the fall and I'm am still dancing. I am teaching a couple hip-hop workshops this summer!

What CD's are in my CD player right now?......

Kelly is rocking my world with her Breakaway album! I love it! She combines pop and rock beautifully with her oh so powerful voice!

Frankie J is a recent purchase and I haven't made it through the whole CD yet, but from what I have heard, it sounds great. He has a smooth and versatile voice with some great beats, but I don't think it's a MUST BUY like Kelly Clarkson is.

The voice is back and this little Tandi couldn't be happier! She is now at her first number 1 in a long time and this CD is GREAT! She has a great collaboration on track 7 with Nelly! GO MARIAH!

And last but certainly not least, Envogue's Greatest Hits is in my player now and eveyone knows I'm a HUGE fan of Destiny's Child, but women R &B groups started with these ladies! They made you....FREE YOUR MIND!

*The new Balck Eyed Peas album is on my wish list.

FUNNY STORY.....THAT WILL GROSS YOU OUT!
*I went to DSW warehouse because I love shoes the other day, and I was walking when I heard clicking. I then turned around and this old woman was sitting on the bench with the mirrors where you look at your shoes, and she was clipping her toenails IN THE SHOE STORE! And it was not discrete. The clippings were flying EVERYWHERE! I was so disgusted that I had to leave! WHO DOES THAT??? WHAT A CRAZY LADY! What, she didn't have enough time to do that before her shopping trip? Was she trying to make her toes pretty before she tried on some strappy sandals! HOW GROSS! Old people are Nuts!

*SAY FAREWELL TO BROADCASTING AT WESTMINSTER...

*Monday we had the Broadcast Communications Festival, which was a very successful day. I planned and scheduled the Titan Radio Remote in which we asked questions about artists and we gave away what Poodle would call(so, so Fly) Titan Radio T-shirts. We also gave tours of the remote truck. It was a cold day for a remote to be held outside, but it was still a great day. Myself, and all the rest of the seniors gave our senior presentations and they were all great. People that were not involved in broadcasting came out to see the presenations and they were all very impressed. Many don't realize all that it takes in Broadcasting. I went way over time and Mr. Weaver called me the new "Lorraine." She was a girl who graduated 2 years ago and she played almost every aircheck from news, radio announcing, and she played almost every package she ever made as well. (That was not me, but he thought it was funny).

*It was GREAT to see the underclassman come out and support us. It's amazing to me to see and listen to the growth in them. We all trained them and took them under our wing, and it makes me so proud to see how far they've come.

*I will miss everyone here and I could not have done it without all my fellow broadcasters, Mr. Weaver, and Dr. Barner. I hope to continue on in the biz and I owe all my success to all those who have supported me.

*Mine and Poodle's last morning show is on a special day...It's this upcoming Tuesday from 7 t0 10AM, and next year she will take on a morning show with Amanda Hauger. YOU GO GIRLS! HOLA GIRL! (Inside joke, sorry).

*Poodle had our morning show with WHAT CELEBRITY DO YOU HATE? This week, I hate Chris Klein! He is a sissy. Beth Grubbs called in and she hates Macy Gray cause she sounds like Donald Duck! I agree!

*We are having a Broadcast bonding day at my apartment next Wednesday and we are cooking out! WHAT FUN!

*We also had a fun night last night at our place for the last broadcast night together after our last television broadcast. We had some beverages and we sang some kareoke. I sang my standard songs...you gotta love it...Denise Williams-Let's Hear it For the Boy from FOOTLOOSE, and the Queen Of Soul, Aretha Frankin's RESPECT! What a great time!

THIS WEEK:

This week has been crazy with class! I had 4 papers to write for one class and I had a quiz and a presentation and projects due, and of course I do them at the last minute because that's when I have to make time to do it. But it's still quality work and I still get it done! What other way would Broadcast Majors have it? We know things change and we have to pull things together at the last minute no matter how planned out things can be, so we naturally procrastinate. That's what I'd like to call myself...a natural procrastinator. It's in my nature!

*This Monday we have our first Broadcast Communications Festival! We wanted to put together a fun day for our senior presentations because they are usually all spread out over the course of a week or two, but we thought we'd have ONE BIG CELEBRATION ALL DAY! How fun is that?! Here is the schedule for the day....

9AM: Krispy Kremes in the McKelvey Center! (Yes, we are giving away free food. If there is one reason for you to come, this should be it! Come on, college students live for free food!)

*For the Titan Radio Remote, I am planning a Trivia game that involves questions about artists and songs that play on Titan Radio! We will be giving away prizes as well! I made a :30 promo spot for the event that ran this week as well. I have also been helping and adding in promos that other people have made for the event! I am planning a lot for my senior presenatation basically highlighting my expereince at Westminster, how it helped me to do the best at my internship, my job at Froggy, and what I'm doing in the future! I don't want to give away everything though because I want to keep you in suspense! All the more reason for you to come! If Poodle's going to be there, so should you!

*Poodle and I had a good morning show this morning. We were a little out of it because we were both really tired, but I think that sometimes that works because I listen back and we are funnier! We talked about entertainment news and the BC Festival. The celebrity that Poodle and I hate this morning is Winnie the Pooh! I know that is weird, but he doesn't wear pants and he is always happy and like Sponge Bob Sqaure Pants, the older crowd(like people my age) are obsessed with him! What is it with cartoons! You should be watching better things like Making the Band 3 on MTV! GROW UP PEOPLE! Cartoons are for little kids! My 2 year-old brother watches cartoons, now should I? NO!

*Mariah Carey's album was number 1 last week! It's been her first number 1 album in eight years! Go MARIAH! SHE'S RIPE AND SHE'S BACK!

*The job search is still going! I am interviewing this week for a PR job. We will see! Keep your fingers crossed!

ARTICLE:

On show-biz in tonight on CNN, which is a great entertainent program that you should all watch...they were talking about the morning show ratings war right now! The executive producer for the Today show either resigned or was fired? The ratings have been going up for the Early morning show with Diane Sawyer on ABC, and the morning show on CBS has the least viewers with 3 million, but they still do well. The Today show has been in the lead for ratings for the past six years, but Good Morning America is cathing up fast! Why is the Today show so successful and what is Good Morning America doing differently if anything at all? The Today show was the first to go outside with Al Roker and they invented alot of the things that are normal for all the morning shows! The Today show brings in half..yes I said HALF of NBC's ratings and money! Will Good Morning America catch up? Is Katie Couric over? We shall see!

Too Much to Do, but it's so fun!

This Week:

This has been a week of multi-tasking and job searching. This week is our annual all-day live broadcast of Relay for Life, which takes a lot of planning and organizing. I have planned it and helped for the past 3 years and this will be my fourth, only this time, I really felt like a senior passing my duties on to someone else since I will be leaving. My Professor wanted his radio announcing and media management classes to organize and plan the event in coordination with me and my other fellow radio station leader, Poodle. It has been fun though to see the underclassman excited about this event because it is a fun day and it is for a good cause. The best part is that we are out and being seen in the community. This is the best time to get feedback from our target audience about what they think of the station and the music, which always helps. We need loyal listeners because without them, our station would never be a complete success.

Anyway, we will be down at the Westminster College track all day with interviews and live drops with DJ's in the station running the board all day! We play the music for the people walking around the track and there are multiple booths to visit and talk to. For some reason too, it never rains on Relay for Life Day. In four years, it has not rained and there is no rain in the forecast for tomorrow. I look forward to this remote and supporting the American Cancer Society.

*I'm getting ready for our Senior Broadcast Festival on Monday April 25th! It's an all day event and anyone is welcome to come! We will be giving presentations about our experiences here at Westminster as a Broadcast major and we will be talking about our futures! We have a lot of work to still do!

*Poodle and I had our morning show this morning and we had a lot to talk about today! We talked about Britney's pregnancy, Nick Carter's alleged drunk-driving charges, new music artists, fun stories, and everything! We are a great team as leaders and as morning show hosts together. I only hope that when I leave school and go out into the real world that I will be so lucky as to work and get along with someone like her! We also talked about what celebrity we hated. We had a special guest in the studio and she said that she hates Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt because she thinks they are scum because of what they did to Jennifer Aniston. How sad. :(
Uh oh! What are they doing in the bushes?

THE JOB SEARCH:

The actual search is good. The response is not. I have applied so many places and found so many places to apply to, but I have not heard from any of them. I am going to change my approach and start calling the places that I applied to because I should be persistent. I will continue job searching til I find something.

*INFINITY VISIT!

Poodle got a job as a board op at Infinity where I did my internship, so I went to visit them this week! When I go there, I feel right at home! I love it there and they are all so sweet and supportive. We sat in with Mr. Johnny Hartwell and I talked to him about Froggy. He and the rest of the people there are proud! They told me I'm welcome to come back anytime. It pays to be a good intern. Believe me, people notice you and make sure you keep in touch with those people.

*NEW CD's!
WooHoo! This has been what I have waited for! Mariah Carey's "Emancipation of Mimi," came out this past Tuesday! I'm a huge fan and it is a great CD! She has an awesome voice! Go out and get it! Also, my man going solo, Rob Thomas's new CD," Something to Be" is coming out on Tuesday!

*All my favorite artists will be on VH1's Save the Music concert this Sunday at 9PM! Joss Stone! Love her! Alicia Keys! Love her! Rob Thomas! Love him! They will all be on singing together and I am excited to watch it! I heard it was a great show! Make sure you catch it!

*My girls, Melissa Batulis, a reporter at WENY in Elmira New York and Sarah Bowers an Assistant producer at WTAE in Pittsburgh will be here this weekend and I will be hanging out with them! I miss them!

THIS WEEK:

I'm so excited that it is April and it is Spring this week! It's not cold and the weather is perfect! This week I ran a promotion with our local Tanning Salon, South Beach Tanning! They gave 3 free tanning sessions for us to give away on the morning shows this whole week. It was a great promotion especially at this time of year because people are getting ready for the summer and they are all tanning. I really wanted to expand our listenership and I thought this contest was at the perfect time of year! It went great! South Beach Tanning was happy and so were all the listeners. I made the contest to be the 8th caller to call and win. It was easy, but more people always listen when you are giving something away for free! I made :30 promo spots and on air promo cards for everyone to read on the air! The DJ's are very good about checking what is in the studio and promoting the stuff that is on the promo cards! I believe the media management and the Announcing class have helped a lot with getting the newbies more in tune with what is going on and getting them more motivated to work on their craft!

Poodle and I had our morning show today and it felt great since it is a beautiful day and it will be a beautiful weekend! It was the first weekend where I didn't have to announce that there was going to be rain or snow or cold weather! Poodle and I talked about a lot of entertainment news, we also did the Celebrity you Hate. This week, I hate Mischa Barton. I like the OC, but I think Mischa Barton is average and she's not my favorite. But, this is a fun game. If there is someone that you hate, let us know. I'm getting down to the wire with the job search and I've been applying since September! It's making me nervous and makes me feel like I will never get a job. I also have to remember that every college senior is looking for a job right now and the positions are very limited.

I went to the Arts Career Day and it was fun. We sat in on panel discussions where different PR, Advertising, and Broadcast professionals told us about their experiences in the business. We got to network a little bit and that was good. It was great advice, I just wish those people were actually hiring and looking for people. But, the panel did help me realize that I need to beef up my cover letters and not be so formal. I'm proud of Pat Sandora and Kirstan Gides who talked to the keynote speaker...Producer at WQED in Pittsburgh, Rick Seback. They got him to come on our half hour news magazine..."The County Line" for the Interview segment! Go Westminster Broadcast students! We really know how to network. The one person that really helped was a man that makes movies now. He has done everything and I read in his bio that he was a producer at the same place I applied for a job. I talked to him and he told me exactly who to call and talk to and to tell them that I ran into him. That helped and it was nice of him to do that.

It's April and graduation is getting closer and closer! There are a lot of events to look forward too! Next week is the annual Relay for Life and Titan Radio is really involved with that! I'll be doing a lot next week!

I'm looking forward to Rob Thomas's first solo album coming out on April 19th called "Something to Be!" I've seen Matchbox 20 live 3 times and they are amazing and Rob Thomas is great! "Lonely No More," is my favorite song right now! I'm that annoying person that puts their favorite song on repeat til I get sick of it! I LOVE ROB THOMAS!

Howard Stern Opts To Drop Ft. Myers Affiliate

In a move that topped evening newscasts throughout Southwest Florida, WXRK/New York-based syndicated morning host Howard Stern has refused to renew his contract with Beasley Broadcast Group Classic Rocker WRXK (96K-Rock)/Ft. Myers after eight years waking up Lee and Collier Counties. In an statement read on the air this morning, 96K-Rock PD John Rozz explained that his station's contract with The Howard Stern Show expired as of this evening. "Since Howard's future plans are to get out of the radio business, he is moving on. Here at 96K-Rock we know how important it is to stay topical and entertaining in the morning, and we pledge to continue giving you the best morning programming in Southwest Florida." Stern announced on his show today that he declined to renew his contract with WRXK apparently because another Beasley station — Sports Talk WQAM/Miami — dropped his program a few months ago over indecency concerns. Stern noted on his program today that he could not understand why Beasley thought his show's content was acceptable for Ft. Myers but not for Miami and that Beasley could not have it both ways. In a statement to WBBH-TV/Ft. Myers, Stern's agent, Don Buchwald, said, "He has it in his power to make decisions, as do other people, to pull the show."
Market speculation has WRXK's afternoon Stan and Haney program moving to mornings, starting Monday, while the nighttime Liz Wilde Show would bump up to afternoon drive. Stan and Haney plan to make an announcement regarding the future of their program at 3pm tomorrow.

I've been following news on Howard Stern since he quit Infinity and I think he is in way over his head. Just go to Sirius already because I'm not going to pay for you!

Resume Tape Outline

*I want to include many elements on my resume tape showcasing my ability to handle a shift and handle it well.

I. START OF THE TAPE
A. Open the mic
1. Include the best of the best talk break. Preferably a short one that includes my name, but it should be the best of the best.
2. The levels on the tape should be the same for each talk break, so I will adjust it.
3. The opening sound should be tailored to the station I am applying for and the format and the mood of that station. Research on the station should be done before choosing talk breaks for the tape.

II. MIDDLE OF THE TAPE
1. Should still include a variety of talk breaks. I will use a long one because it is good and I have a caller. This shows that I can relate to and deal with this listeners in a good manner.
2. The middle of the tape should still be the best of the best of my talk breaks for an effective resume tape. Just because it’s the middle doesn’t mean the tape should die, it should keep momentum and still be the best of what I have.

III. END OF THE TAPE
1. Once again, this part should still be the best of the best.
2. I would like for the tape to NOT sound like it ends abruptly. It would be nice to have a talk break that heads into a stop set or a last talk break of my shift.
3. The tape should be no longer than 1 minute 15 seconds. Should really only be a minute with the best talk breaks.

*I want my tape to portray what I have to offer as a DJ. I also want it to be a good reflection of my paper resume and the skills that are listed. I’ve worked on my resume tape a lot already and I’ve had some responses, which is good. I’m still working at Froggy, so I will continue to do my best at my shifts, so I have a great selection for my tape. The tape should always be updated too. I will never hand in any talk break where I’m talking about a new song when I know that by the time I send out my tape that it will be an old song. I am only using talk breaks from Froggy.

First Week Back

THIS WEEK:

Okay, so it's the first week back after Spring Break and I found out that my classes end this month! AHHHHHH! That means I have to be searching and sending out resumes EVERYDAY! Over break I created 5 different resumes pertaining to different types of jobs because I would love to have at least a job even if it's not in my field right away.

This week I made :30 second promo spots and on air promo cards for the DJ's to read. I was very excited with our SAVE THE TUB campaign. We saw the results this week as the new sign were put up. Me and other broadcast majors including my morning show co-host were in the school paper and it was a really funny picture.

I will be teaching a hip-hop workshop over the summer at the Sweetwater Center for the Arts in Sewickley and I'm very excited!

My friend that is an assitant producer at WTAE might be coming to visit this weekend! I'm very excited to see her since I have not seen her in awhile.

For the most part, I am continuing to work on resumes and my resume tape this weekend, as well as catching up on homework! Don't we all love it!

Wilkes Barre Station Owner Found Guilty Of Sex Abuse

A Lackawanna County, PA jury has found Douglas Lane, owner of WICK, WYCK & WWDL/Wilkes Barre, guilty of sexually abusing a teenage boy and taking photos of another teenage boy who was nude. Lane now faces between five and 82 years in jail, and on Wednesday he was taken to Lackawanna County Prison after being free on bail since his arrest in early 2004, the Scranton Times reports.
The jury deliberated for just 90 minutes before finding Lane guilty of two counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, five child pornography counts for photographing a naked 15-year-old boy and one count of child pornography possession. Lane was found not guilty of four other child pornography charges, the newspaper reported. Lane's attorney, James Walker, plans on appealing the verdict while his client awaits sentencing.

SPRING BREAK?

THIS WEEK:

This week is our week off of classes and school. Many of my friends have gone to Cancun, Las Vegas, San Diego, and New York City. But, I have decided to stick around here. I have been looking and doing some more job searching.

I had 3 interviews this week and that was my goal for this week. They all came from the WestPacs job fair that I went to, so I recommend that people attend more job fairs because you get to meet people in person and ask questions and give them your resume. I got more results going to the job fair than I did sending out resumes myself. I will also be attending another job fair in April that will consist of more companies that pertain to what I want to do, but all the fairs are helpful. I know your senior year in college is supposed to be about going on vacation and having a good relaxing time, but for me this is critical job searching time.

I am working at Froggy this weekend and I still love being on the air. I had a good shift last week and it was fun too!

My boyfriend and I signed on the new house and we're in it now. I am cleaning and getting that ready as well over the break. We still have a lot to do, but I'm not going to worry too much about it til I have a job and I'm done with school.

To my good fortune, my car died this week and once again I have to get the Taurus fixed.

ARTICLE:
I would really like to know what everyone else thinks about the Terri Shivo case if I'm spelling her name correctly. Personally, I would want to die if I couldn't communicate with the world but I think her husband is disgusting. She might want to die and she might not want to. The point is, she never had a say and I think both scenarios are right, but her husband still makes me sick. I can't believe his wife has been brain damaged for 15 years and he decided to start a relationship with someone else and have kids with someone else while staying married to her. That makes me hurt for her, and I think he is a jerk. Should every case like this make it to the Federal court? What do you think?

* Had to critique air checks for the Radio/TV announcing class this week and it was much like the air check week I conducted back in November. I was very pleased to hear how everyone is doing! Everyone has improved so much on the air. A lot of the DJ's still need to work on developing their on air personality and some technicalities, but as soon as they do that, they'll be on their way! The one thing I always want these students to knowis that they should never stop working and should never get a big ego. Especially in this business, if you get big-headed, that'll lead to the end of your career and people won't want to work with you. You should always have something to work on and imrpove upon even if you've been in the biz for 30 years.

*Poodle and I had our morning show today and it went very well. We did the same bit we do every week wit..."What celebrity do you hate?" We had a special guest in the studio talking about the celebrity that they hate and we had a professor call in! It's a great bit and it's growing. I think he is disgusting and sleezy. Who do you hate?

*I have 3 job interviews set up for next week at various places. I thought it would be a good idea to set them up then, since I have Spring Break coming up. I am not going anyplace warm like most people! This is critical job search time!

ARTICLE:

I talked about this this morning on the morning show, but I will say it again. I know people are really into The Apprentice and Survivor and I used to be into the Apprentice, but the 2 new best shows on Thursday nights are on MTV. There is Making the Band 3 with P.Diddy running the show. I love girl groups like Destiny's Child, so this show is great! They tried to do that once on the WB with Pop Stars and they came out with Eden's Crush who had one song, but I still loved it and I love this show! It's on at 10PM, so catch it! This is a great hour of TV because following Making the Band 3 is Power Girls. This is also a new show about working for major publicist, Lizzie Gruman. It's so great! These girls get to go to opeings of New York clubs and invite celebrities and watch them all night. The next morning they get up and talk about who the stars were flirting with, if they were drunk, and any gossip you can think of. Then, they call in to magazines and get them to write articles about this gossip! It's great TV! Catch it next week from 10-11PM on MTV!

MY LAST CHANCE TO DANCE!

*This week has been awesome in terms of the Dance Theatre Show. This has been my week away from Broadcasting a little because we've had dance every single night this week! I can't believe I'm a senior! All this stuff is really hitting me that I won't be here anymore and I won't be dancing anymore. I am the Public Relations Officer for the show and I did a lot of advertising for it, bringing in my broadcasting resources to help. I did make a promo for the show and I made on air promo cards for the DJ's to read.

*The show has everything from Hip-Hop dancing to Irish dancing and tap, jazz. There is so much and the show is so diverse. This has been by far the best show in all my 4 years here at Westminster. We have added MC's this year. Two more of my fellow Broadcast Communication Majors...Pat Sandora and Kirstan Gides. I also coordinated the Titan Idol to be there to sing the National Anthem every night!

*My dance is very intense and I'm so proud of my dancers and I'm proud to be a leader of this organization! I can't believe it's ending! I hope to continue dancing after this at a studio or maybe teaching a hip hop class somewhere! HA! Hip Hop! Amazing that I work at a Country Station!

*I went to the West Pacs Job Fair in Pittsburgh and I met a lot of people! There were 43 other colleges there so it was kind of annoying, but helpful. I saw Infinity! It was nice to see something familair since I interned there! I talked to a couple other Broadcast Companies that were there as well, but I still need to do a lot of searching and applying. Any leads, let me know! Poodle and I had our morning show this morning and the power went out twice and lost all of our voice tracks for the last hour, but it happens. We had a good show, it wasn't our best, but it was good. We have very good chemistry together.

*I'll be doing a lot next week to make up for this week of Dancing the night away!

America has winnowed the competition on the fourth season of American Idol down to the last dozen.
Once the 120 million-plus votes cast by viewers were tallied Wednesday night, four contestants--Amanda Avila, Nikko Smith, Janay Castine and Travis Tucker--were sent packing, having been deemed less worthy than their competitors to continue vying for Idol glory.

The eliminations were relatively predictable, as three of the four ousted candidates were harshly criticized during their performances earlier in the week.
Tucker, who donned suspenders and covered Bobby Brown's "Every Little Step" Monday night was informed by a snarky Simon Cowell that the rendition was "as good or as bad as you would get in a theme park."
Avila, who tried to channel her inner Tina Turner for her version of "River Deep, Mountain High," was told that she chose her song poorly, seeing as her skills did not compare to the diva's vocal stylings.
As for Castine, following her performance of Selena's "Dreaming of You," Cowell told her he predicted "a suitcase and plane travel within 24 hours."
The only semi-surprise of the night came from the elimination of Smith, whose cover of Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind," generally won approval from the judges, but apparently failed to curry favor with viewers.
This season of Idol continues to suck in the lion's share of viewers--last week's girl's night was the top-rated show of the week, with 26.9 million viewers tuning in, per Nielsen Media Research. Some 24.3 million viewers tuned in for the elimination round, which placed fourth in the week ended Sunday and 23.6 million tuned in to watch the boys compete last Monday.
Next week, the remaining finalists of both sexes meet in a head-to-head sing-off for the first time this season.

*All I have to say is that I love American Idol, but Kelly is the BEST one and she would have been a star eventually without that show. I feel like the show has good singers this year, but not outstanding singers. I think there are more talented people out there! PLEASE GET THEM SIMON!

THIS WEEK:

*This week has been filled with joy as I feel I've accomplished a lot in my promotions director position. We've been running the Titan Idol contest for the past 2 weeks on our small 200-Watt station and this morning I was really excited because we had the most callers in a matter of 3 hours than I've ever seen voting for their favorite contestent. The winner gets to sing the National Anthem at the Westminster College Dance Theatre Show next week! I was so excited that that many people called in! I created 3 new 30-second promos that play at the half hour mark with each of the 3 contestents singing. I made a sweeper promo and I created multiple on air promo cards for the DJ's to read during their shifts!

Poodle and I had our morning show and it went very well! Our chemistry is good together! We are both sarcastic, but it's really funny. I know we are doing well by the reaction of the audience. People will see me later and tell me what was their favorite part of the show that morning or they tell us we are really funny. I even had people tell me that they listened to a whole hour of our show last week! Now...come on, who listens and sits by the radio that long anymore? I'm excited because it helps to hear the audience reation so I know what to keep in the morning show and what to get rid of!

*We were sent an e-mail this morning saying that we saved the TUB! I mentioned what saving the Tub was in a previous blog! We DID it and I feel a lot of accomlishment from that as well! The new sign will be here in 4 to 6 weeks!

DANCE:

I've done a lot for dance this week in my public relations officer position! The show is next week!!!! I can't wait! I made the posters to hang up around town and on campus and they turned out beautiful! I made special invitations for the faculty on card stock, I've created the Titan Idol contest for the winner to sing at the show to get more people there, I placed 2 adds in our campus newspaper and I got the local paper to come and take pictures of our practice and to place a feature article about us, which has never been done before in the paper! I went out in the BLIZZARD this week and hung the posters around town! I am so excited cause I finished my dance last week and it is going to be HOT! It looks so good! It's hip-hop, but very theatrical! I choreographed part of a number, part of someone elses solo number and my number and I'm so excited for the show! We have all varieties of dancing and the show will be great! It's next week, here at Westminster College in Orr Auditorium next Thursday and Friday, march 10th and 11th at 8PM, and Saturday March 12th at 2PM. If you get a chance, PLEASE COME! A former student and Reporter for WENY in Elmira New York, my friend Melissa Butulis is coming as well as my friend Sarah Bowers, Associate Producer at WTAE in Pittsburgh! Dance will be my life pretty much this week! I will be making promos and promo cards for the show as well!

*I will be attending the West Pacs job fair next week in Pittsburgh! Graduation is creeping up quickly and I need a J-O-B! I got into grad school, so I need a job in Pittsburgh! I'm hoping to set up interviews for the week of the 21st since we have spring break!

*The CD right now that I keep playing over and over is Joss Stone's new album..."Mind, Body, and Soul!" I love artists that have soul and can really sing and she can! It's great! She's about to come out with her third single from this album, "Spoiled," which is a great track on the CD!

ARTICLE:
I have to make a comment about the Bachelorette this week! I am so MAD! I watched TV for 3 hours and she still didn't choose anyone! I don't think the network was preapared for her to turn the guy she picked down too! I am in broadcasting and I know the 3 hours was for ratings sake, but I was still mad as a viewer!!!! I guess no one is good enough for Jen Shaft! It makes me not want to watch the show ANYMORE!

GRAD SCHOOL:
This has been a good and productive week. I went to my mailbox on Tuesday and I recieved my acceptence letter for Point Park University for their Journalism and Mass Communications program! I was very excited because it will help me in the Broadcast field for where I want to be. I want to be an executive, or VP of Programming and run the station, and all the broadcasting companies I've talked to said that if that was the path I wanted to take, then Grad School would be a good option! Now, for my loaded senior year, getting into Grad School is one less thing I have to worry about! Now, the next thing to worry about is getting a job! Obviously, since the school is in Pittsburgh, I will be looking for a job in the Pittsburgh area.

THIS WEEK:
I ran Titan Idol this week and I am extending the contest because people are just catching on to the contest, so they are just starting to call in and compete. So, I am extending the contest til next Wednesday! I've been helping other organizations on campus as well this week. The career center needed promos for their resume building workshops and their Internship Fair, so I helped with that. The Admissions Office is having a slide show for their campus visitation day and they needed me to cut music for them. Poodle and I had our morning show today and we sound very good, if I don't say so myself. We have audience interaction, and our personalities really work well together. Every week, we are starting "What celebrity do you Hate." People are calling in and we're getting a good response. This morning someone called in and said they hated Linsay Lohan, and Star Jones. This segment is really funny. I will be critiquing some airchecks next week for The Radio/ and TV annoucning class for my Independent Study. I like helping people get better with their on-air personality and skills!

PROUD!
*Ijust wanted to take a moment to say that I am very proud of my fellow classmates for snagging some awesome opportunites! Congrats to Elizabeth Farry for snagging an internship with the weekend Today show in New York City as a SOPHOMORE! She has talent beyond her years and I'm sure she'll do well! I also have to take a moment and say that I am extremely proud of my friend and fellow senior broadcaster, Pat Sandora for snagging an interview with the Page Program in New York City! I can't express my happiness enough for them! I think they'd agree when I say that we all owe snagging these opportunities to our expereinces here at Westminster with the Broadcast Program and our wonderful faculty! Look out World! They're on their way!

I watched Jennifer Lopez and her first runway show on MTV last night. I have to say that she is one of the most powerful women in the entertainment industry and I would love to have as much poise and power as she does!

THIS WEEK:

*I've been prmotions CRAZY this week! Dr. Barner wanted to save a long time tradition and save the name of our student union, which is the "Titan Union Building." We all call in the TUB for short. It has been formally changed to the "Orchard Street Cafe," but nobody calls it that. In order to save it, we need about 850 signitures on the "SAVE THE TUB PETITION." We've been broadcasting live from the "TUB," yesterday and we are doing that today as well. We are also walking around the basketball games tomorrow to get people to sign the petition. We were successful on Thursday with about 500 signitures and we need some more. I hope we can do it. For this project, I had help chasing people around and getting them to say one liners about saving the tub. We have 16 of those sweeper promos. I also created 2 on air promos for the DJ's to read at least once an hour. We even bought an actual baby tub to represent the tub and the students think that's really creative and funny. I owe that one all to Poodle's creative mind.

*The career center had me make more 30 second promos for the Internship Fair they are having on Tuesday. I'm typing up on-air promo cards to read for that as well.

*I am also getting all the details set up for "Titan Idol" next week. Obviosly, it's like American Idol. They are going to compete starting on Tuesday. What will happen is on the morning show for the next week through the following Monday, people will be able to call in and sing for us. We are going to record all the singers and the following week, we are going to play pieces of the song each person sang and the listeners will have a week to vote. The winner will get to sing the National Anthem at the Friday night Dance Theatre show on March 11. This is a big local community event and one of the biggest events on campus throughout the entire year. I'm not putting an age limit on the contest, so it will be interesting and fun! I will make 2, 30 second promos for it, and I will make on-air promos for the DJ's to read as well.

*Poodle and I had our morning show this morning and it was a lot of fun as ALWAYS! Our chemistry on the air gets better and better every week. Make sure you listen for it on Fridays at 7:00AM ...TP in the Morning on 89FM.

*I'm dancing in the basketball games tomorrow and I'm nervous about that, but Pat and I made up the dance, so I shouldn't be, but I am a little.

*I'm still waiting to hear from the Grad school I applied to. Everything is in, I just hope I get in.

*Right now, I'm on the hunt for a full-time job. May and graduation is approaching fast!

ARTICLE:

Radio One Exec Sees Reason For Hope

Radio One EVP/CFO Scott Royster said yesterday morning that his company is performing well so far this year, and sees indications that the radio industry is recovering. "There are reasons to be cautious and reasons to be optimistic," Royster said during his company's quarterly earnings call. "Our markets were up in the low-single-digits in January, and business appears to be improving modestly, month by month." He said that while local is healthy in some markets, national continues to be "a conundrum."
However, Royster said Radio One is taking steps to take more control over its fortunes. "As our new stations start to kick in later this year, that will give us some wind at our back, in addition to some strategic programming moves that we have made or will make at various points this year," he said. Still, Royster's not ready to declare that the radio industry's financial woes are behind it. "We are not yet ready to pound the table for radio yet, but perhaps a little light tapping is in order. We actually feel more optimistic than we have in a while. If the first six weeks of 2005 are any indication, Radio One is in for a very busy year in which the ground work will continue to be laid for a very exciting future."

Announcer/ On-air personality/ Morning show host

Perform my on-air shifts as a professional. Make my on-air personality conversational for the audience to relate to by being enthusiastic, informative, and entertaining.
I will air check all my shifts here and at Froggy to get them ready for resume tapes.Gather and prepare a compelling, clean, attention grabbing resume tape, compiling my best moments as an on-air personality to apply for and submit to commercial stations for full time positions.
Create a separate resume tape specifically to apply for morning show positions as a co-host to submit to radio stations.Prepare my tapes for this semester seeing as I want to apply for jobs as soon as possible.Producing/Production
Produce at least 2 promo spots that are exciting and that grab the audience attention.Complete my promos this semester to have done for a production resume tape sometime during this semester to apply for any production job.Create these spots using other tactics than my voice. I may use others voices, sound effects, a special idea, nat sound, etc.

Promotion

*Get ideas for Titan Radio by being knowledgeable about the radio industry and the music that works for the HOT AC format.Communicate and be professional about dealing with staff members. Make sure people respect me as a leader, but also know that I will be available at all times to help the staff solve any problems they may have.
Make sure the radio station runs smoothly with new and fresh music, good knowledgeable disk jockeys that are technically advanced as well as advanced on the air.Help new people become more confident on the air through training on the board and being in front of the microphone.Making sure all the promotional spots are up to date and topical.
Critique on-air personalities through air check weeks. Applying and making my resume stand out for jobs as a music director or promotion director.

LOVEY DOVEY

THIS WEEK:
It seems fitting in honor of Valentine's Day to type in red. This week has of course been what else, but.....A CRAZY ONE! This semester brings along a lot of homework, so I've been spending more time in the library than I like to, but I have to pass and I have to graduate! We are having a LOVE SONGS WEEKEND here at Titan Radio and we are playing 4 love songs an hour to replace our regular 80's or 90's songs. People are going to be able to make requests and dedications all weekend by calling (724) 946-7232 or emailing the station at....titanradio@westminster.edu
This should be fun! We are voice tracking for the weekend so some jocks will be on. The dedications will be played on Valentine's Day. I have been making promo after promo. I made 2 fun promos for the weekend. I also cut 2 other promos for 2 other events going on. Lot's of production this week! I'm still planning the Titan Idol event and that will take some work, but that should be really fun! We have a remote the week after next. Needless to say...Titan Radio is hopping! Poodle and I have our morning show on Friday, which is always a blast!

THE THINGS YOU DO FOR YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER:
Since it is Valentine's Day week, I feel I should talk a little about the situation with my boo. I am staying in Pittsburgh and going to grad school, hopefully. We got a 4 bedroom house and I know that sounds crazy...it is, but I'm excited for it! He is also MAKING ME go to this MONSTER TRUCK RALLY on Friday night. I am NOT a country girl and needless to say, I am being forced. That's all for this week on my boo!

J.P. Morgan Report Scares Satellite Radio Investors

Small-mid cap media analyst Barton Crockett and entertainment analyst Spencer Wang in December 2004 conducted J.P. Morgan's second consumer survey on satellite radio, receiving more than 1,600 responses that showed a diminished interest in subscribing to XM or Sirius. According to the brokerage firm, interest in satellite radio dipped from 43% of households -- seen in J.P. Morgan's May 2004 consumer study — to 35% of households. And while content exclusivity is shifting share between XM and Sirius, these don't seem to be expanding the overall market, which the brokerage says is driven mainly by commercial-free music options. AMONG SICKNESS

THIS WEEK:

This week has been crazy! For some reason I've always been a pretty healthy girl, but I've been sick more times this year than I can count! Last week I had the flu and this week I got a sinus infection and I threw my back out at dance practice. I feel so accident prone!

Anyway, that didn't stop me from completing class work and duties. No matter how sick we all are, we still have dead lines that have to be met. I wroked at Froggy on Saturday night and I have to say that i think it was one of my best shifts ever! I started in August, and I've had many shifts since then, but it was my best shift ever! It makes me feel good that fellow seniors and Broadcasters listen and support me too. Thanks to Ian Durham, Megan Marshall, and Jason Mackey for listening and calling in and offering support! You guys ROCK!

Before the County Line yesterday, it was Salon de la Tandi. I did the Sports Director(Sebastian Driver's) make-up, Anchor Mike Wolenski's make-up and Anchor Shannon McClain's hair! Hey, you got to do what it takes to look good on camera!

I am creating a big promotion called Titan Idol, which of course will be like American Idol and the winner will get to perform on the busiest night of our Dance Theatre show here at Westminster! I still have a lot of details to work out.

We had a give away all week with T-shirts for an on campus event that is happening this weekend. I have to make a promo for the career center and they gave me a series of projects that I can be working on! We also have to pick love songs today for the Valentine's Day weekend next week.

Poodle and I had our morning show this morning and it went very well. We usually voice track the last hour, but we decided to stay and do it live!

My grad school application is still in the works! I applied, now the letters of recommendation have to be sent in, I have to write a statement of intent, and I have to send official transcripts. I'll still keep everyone updated on that process!

Miss Info Considers Legal Action Against WQHT/New York

The lone team member not fired or suspended for the now-infamous airing of a parody song that made light of victims of the Dec. 26, 2004 South Asia tsunami is deciding whether or not to take legal action against the Emmis CHR/Rhythmic known as "Hot 97." According to her attorney, Kenneth Thompson, Miss Info is considering a lawsuit based on the station's creation of "a hostile work environment"; the host protested the airing of the song during a contentous on-air discussion with lead morning show member Miss Jones and another staffer, Todd Lynn, who has since been terminated from the station. The New York Daily News reports that Info is mulling legal action "if certain workplace issues cannot be resolved."

THIS WEEK:

This was a crazy week. Sometimes I beleive I would (to sound cliche) lose my head if it wasn't attatched to my body. By Wednesday, I thougt I had lab for my science class and definately have lab on Thursday, then I thought I had to train someone in the radio station that same night and I definately had to do that on Thursday too. I really sometimes feel like I'm going crazy. But, I think everyone feels like that sometimes. Other than that, I had a great week in the broadcast world. I trained new and upcoming on-air personalities for our 200-watt Titan Radio. They were of course all nervous, but once they realized it's not that bad, the nervousness seemed to slowly disappear. I'm going to continue training, and listening to air checks to see how they're doing once they become more comfortable with their on-air personalities.

My wonderful morning show co-host and I had our 2nd morning show this Friday and I thought it went very well. Our chemistry was good and we include a lot of local information and we gave away a prize, which let us know we had listeners as well.

I'm still in the process of applying for graduate school. I'm actually pretty excited about it. I know that sounds crazy, to be excited about more school, but I am. I'll keep everyone posted about the progress on that.

Research On Radio Ad-Listening Patterns Released

A new study by Atlanta-based Navigauge, which does passive monitoring of in-car listening, provides some interesting data on which categories of commercials keep people's attention. Tops on the list in the December survey was "medications and nonprescription remedies," followed by "consumer electronics" and "religious, charitable and humanitarian." Morning drive listener are more likely to listen intently to commercials than listeners in other dayparts, and the research also suggests that attentive listening is linked to format — for example, people who listen to News/Talk and Country tend to pay better attention than listeners to other formats.

*I think this is really interesting. Maybe we should actually include topics that deal with some of these subject matters cause we obviously can't play commercials. Or maybe some PSA's. Listeners often don't listen intently to commercials, but they listen to them more itently during the morning drive because they have a patience for more talk and less music...the loyal listeners at least.

FIRST WEEK BACK!

I know this is meant to be the first week back and I have done a lot this week than I did over break, but I definately don't feel like we just got back from Christmas break because it feels so normal and like second nature to be back in the radio station and the news room!

THIS WEEK

I created a 30 second promo about the top songs of 2004 that Heather Storm and I will be hosting this weekend. We are counting down the top 60 songs of 2004 on Saturday and Sunday from noon to four. I made on air promo cards for the on-air personalities to read on the air. Heather and I had our first morning show as well today and I thought it went pretty good. We talked about entertainment news, kicker stories, and even sports. We're calling it TP in the morning (interesting, I know). Heather is my third morning show co-host since I've been at Titan Radio and I'm glad because it helps me learn a lot about how to adjust and work with other on-air personalities.

I've considered going to graduate school to be more apt to attain the management positions in the radio industry. I'll keep you posted on that!

Powell Departs FCC With 'Mixture Of Pride And Regret'

The FCC Chairman officially announced earlier today that he plans to step down from his post some time in March. He thanked President Bush for the "incredible privilege" of leading the FCC, but said it is now time to "let someone else take the reins of the agency." Powell said, "Having completed a bold and aggressive agenda, it is time for me to pursue other opportunities. During my tenure, we worked to get the law right in order to stimulate innovative technology that puts more power in the hands of the American people. Evidence of our success can be seen increasingly in the offices, the automobiles and the living rooms of the American consumer." He continued, "My only significant regret is that I will no longer have the pleasure and privilege of working shoulder to shoulder with the most talented and dedicated staff and colleagues that I have known." Powell said he looks forward to spending some time with his wife and two sons before "taking up [his] next challenge."

CHRISTMAS TIME

* I'm back and boy did I have a busy week! I have been newswoman this week. I have done 2 wraps, about 4 or 5 actualities, a live report and 3 newscasts as the anchor, reporter and producer this week. As always I had fresh new stories for each newscast. I also did some production work this week working on my resume tape and I was thinking and brainstorming ideas for promotions next semster.

*Over Christmas break, I would really like to visit my internship from the summer and read some books about the history of radio and how it was started. I would like to read stories about how the pioneers of radio became big and how they had a steady career in the business. People like Dick Clark, Casey Casum, and others would be interesting to know more about. It is something I've been meaning to do, but with the busy broadcast schedule here and at Froggy, I haven't had the leisure of doing that.

*I am going to Florida, then Texas to visit my family for 2 weeks for Christmas, so that should be fun!

*I can't believe that next semester is the last here and I'm really looking hard for a job. I am keeping my airchecks from Froggy fresh and I'm hoping something will come of that. If nothing, I'm getting more and more experience on air and more and more experience making a resume tape.

* I am excited for Christmas break because it will be a nice time to relax and reflect and look toward my goals for the future. I really need to do that. In the meantime, I will be working as Betty Croaker at Froggy! Tune in when you can!

*I actually was watching Larry King last night and one of the major people that I admire in broadcasting is Andy Rooney. He was on last night and he said that news is becoming easily accessible in other forms of communication, like being online or hearing what happened through someone else. He also said that most people should get their information from television news. The only problem is that he thinks it is unrealistic to have a 20 minute newscast to tell people everything that is going on in the world. My question is...What do you think? Is he right? What should we do about it?

LIFE EXPERIENCE

*This has been a crazy past couple of weeks, but I'm back on track. The one thing I am going to say about my past week is that "You should never take a job that isn't what you want to do no matter how bad you need it." I learned from my mistake and I'm ready to get back on track.

*I've already gotten back into the groove. I am starting with a news shift that I am producing and anchoring. I am going to get back on the radio and I am now in a new position as the radio promotions director. I like promotions and it should work out well.

*I worked at Froggy as Betty Croaker on Thanksgiving day. A lot of people that I knew called in because they were all sitting around listening to Froggy while eating their dinner. I am also working at Froggy this Saturday night as usual from 7 to midnight. Everyone needs to make sure to tune in. 98.3, 104.3, 103.5, 94.9

*I really don't have a lot to say other than I still have some things to work out, but this is where I am happy and this is the profession for me.

Apple Postpones iTunes Canada Launch
Apple earlier said that it hoped to have the Canadian version of its popular digital music store up and running by the end of November. Now, however, the company is simply saying the service will arrive "very soon." The service launch has been eagerly anticipated in Canada, and Apple representatives were saying as late as Monday that they expected the store to be up and running before the end of November. Apple hasn't provided any specifics on why the launch has been delayed.

AS ALWAYS, THIS WAS A CRAZY WEEK! IN MY LAST BLOG, I TALKED ABOUT THE FACT THAT I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO GET A FULL-TIME JOB AND I HAD 2 JOB INTERVIEWS THIS WEEK. THEY WERE BOTH FOR DIRECT MARKETING FIRMS. BOTH HAD A PRELIMINARY INTERVIEW FOR LIKE 20 MINUTES WHERE THEY ASKED YOU A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS AND THEN THEY CALL FOR A SECOND INTERVIEW.

BOTH JOBS INTERVIEWED ABOUT 200 PEOPLE AND NARROWED IT DOWN TO 5. I WAS PRETTY PROUD OF MYSELF SEEING AS HOW I GOT CALLS FOR SECOND INTERVIEWS FROM BOTH PLACES. THIS TIME I HAVE TO GO OUT AND MEET CLIENTS LIKE A REGULAR WORK DAY. I GET TO ASK QUESTIONS AND BE WITH OTHER MANAGERS FOR THE DAY. I GO OUT FOR THE WHOLE DAY. I THINK A CLEAR ADVANTAGE I HAD IN THESE INTERVIEWS WAS THE FACT THAT I DON'T GET NERVOUS FOR INTERVIEWS. I WAS QUICK TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THAT THEY ASKED. I AM ALSO PROUD SEEING AS HOW THESE ARE JOBS FOR GRADUATES AND I HAVEN'T GRADUATED YET. I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED AS TO HOW THE SECOND INTERVIEWS GO!

Infinity Cuts Ties With Indies
Spokeswoman Karen Mateo tells R&R that, effective immediately, the company will no longer deal with independent record promoters, following the lead of companies like Clear Channel and Cox Radio that have also stopped working with indies. "It's the appropriate business decision for us," Mateo says. "We are no longer using them." Meanwhile, Mateo describes as "inaccurate" a report that Infinity has capped its morning commercial spotloads at 14 spots per hour — or 18 interruptions per hour, including weather, traffic, etc — and has set a limit of 12 spots per hour — or 16 total interruptions — in other dayparts. While she notes that Infinity President/COO Joel Hollander and Viacom co-President/co-COO Les Moonves have made adjustments to spotloads at some stations on a case-by-case basis, Mateo insists that Infinity has no uniform spotload policy across its station group.

What a Change!

WHAT A WEEK!

*This week was a challenging one. I have some personal matters that I'm dealing with that were going to affect my broadcasting career here, but I with the help of lots of people who believe in me and care about me, figured something out!

*I have some financial problems and I didn't think I was going to be able to go to school next semester and I would have to give up my program director position, which is the LAST thing I wanted to do. I love being here, but in reality, I have bills that have to get paid and I'm not making enough money. I went to the registrar's office, the financial aid office, my advisor, and back again. Let's just say, I was everyone's best friend that day. HA! The financial aid office thought it would be best for me to stay a full time student and have 12 credits. So, I worked it all aout and I am taking all night classes next semester, so I can work during the day and put money in the bank. I am also keeping my program director position, which made me very happy. Thanks to Dr. Barner! He helped me out a lot! The only downfall is that I won't graduate on time, but I can probably still walk with my class and graduate provisionally.

*Amanda and I had a great newscast on Monday. We both had more sound than we needed, so we had to cut out some stories, but we worked hard and it was good as always. I scheduled and we had our music committee meeting. I worked at Froggy overnight this week and helped people that were doing projects in the station and in the newsroom. I also helped people with some of their TV packages. I am going to make a Morning show promo next week. I am also working with some local businesses for remotes and promotions in the future. We will definately have one for Christmas.

*THE MUSICAL!

Nick Anthony Elected New Arbitron Advisory Council Chairman
Anthony is the VP/Operations for Rubber City Radio in Akron, OH, and he'll succeed Saga Communications EVP Steve Goldstein in the post. At the same time, Clear Channel/Youngstown, OH Market Manager Bill Kelly is elected to the Vice Chairman post. The elections come as the council prepares for what Goldstein calls a long-need reorganization. "This set up has been this set up since Marconi invented radio," he said. The changes will give the council more of a market-size focus, rather than its current format-based focus. And, Goldstein says the five-biggest Arbitron customers will have representation on the council with the move. That doesn't mean the mom-and-pops will be shut out, though. "We absolutely made sure that there's an equal chance for everybody to get in," he said. "But we needed the largest companies represented because they own so many stations."

Maybe I'm not made for TV

THIS WEEK:
I did a lot this week so far, I don't even know where to start.

*Last Friday I went and did a package at the beautiful Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle, and as usual, things didn't go as planned. I still needed to get my last stand-up and an interview after the concert and the back up battery was dead. It was too late to go and get another one, and I don't have any time to reshoot, that's why I did a package on a Friday night. My last package didn't go well either. I'm really feeling the pressure cause I really want good packages for my resume tape, but things never work out right. It makes me think that maybe, I'm not cut out for TV news reporting. The thing is, it's always problems that I can't control. I thought my package would look better when I edited it, but it didn't and I'm not happy with it at all. Oh well, I guess this is what happens sometimes and you have to roll with it and keep going.

*Something that did go well this week, my group and I had our TV pitch project presentation and it went very well. Our story was the "Wonder Year's" meets "My So Called Life," but we follow the life of an adolescent girl in the 80's to early 90's. The class seemed to be very interested and I thought it was a great idea. I was very proud of my group. They did a great job.

*I did my program director duties, scheduling music and listening to the DJ's to make sure they are reading the on air promos that I wrote out and making sure everything is running smoothly. I've talked with a couple local businesses to do some remotes and promotions in the near future. I've heard a lot of good feedback about the music on the station.

*In NEWS, Amanda Hauger and I got sound and had a Breaking News story. We got the sound like 5 minutes before our news cast and we still got it on. It was a rush, but I love that feeling. I love the adrenaline. We were hoping to make it to the AP wire, but they already had the story on it.

*This hasn't been my best week because I'm feeling pressure and beginning to get worn out. I need to rest and think about things. I never seem to have time to do that. It is a realization that as much as I want to do everything, I just can't. I have to say "NO" to some things.

*My parents that live in Jacksonville are pressuring me to move there after graduation, but they don't understand the business and they've never really approved of me getting into this business. They want me to still consider psychology and go to grad school. They don't understand that this profession is me and I LOVE IT! They want me to move there and quit Froggy, which is like Broadcast suicide. I can't leave something in the business and I won't. I have to take my own path, but everybody wants their parents approval and I wish I had mine.

Number Of AM Stations Still On Downswing

The FCC's latest quarterly station count indicates that the number of commercial AM stations on the air slid from 4,803 at the end of Q3 2003 to 4,770 at the end of Q3 2004. This continues a trend that has been seen by the senior broadcast band all year. At the same time, the FCC counts 6,217 FM stations on the air at the end of Q3. That's 10 more than last year. Including noncommercial FMs, there were a total of 13,450 radio stations on the air at the end of Q3.

Why do you think that there are less and less AM stations? Are people sick of talk radio? Is there a new audience that needs to be reached?

THIS WEEK:

It's so hard to reflect on everything that I do every week because there is so much that happens in matter of seven days....I try my best though.

*Last week was fall break and I really didn't have much of a break. But, that's okay. That's the biz and I love it! I scheduled music and had a music committee meeting just like every week. We are very good and quick! We all have different ideas, but I always have the last say in what happens. I am planning on bringing in some outsiders soon to listen to and rate the music we pick. A focus group. I like to have feedback from others in the target demographic. It's always good to find out more about what your audience wants.

*I had my newscast on Monday and I had one of those soundbites or people on the phone that never be quiet. She gave me way to much information. So, it took a long time to prepare that Actuality because the lady talked for 12 minutes. It was an excellent news cast as always because we work very hard to make it new and fresh and good every week.

*I had to meet with my adviser today about my last set of classes FOREVER! That was really weird because I knew this was the last time I will ever schedule for classes and have to take them. It was the last time for written tests and it just brings me back to the short and forthcoming graduation date (May 14th) ahead. This means the job search is getting a bit more hectic now. I shouldn't have to worry too much though. I've already applied to at least 30 places this year. I just hope I get a job somewhere. I am hoping to start out in a small market and dominate unless I have the chance to work with Infinity in Pittsburgh. It is coming though and I want to be ready.

*In my senior project proposal I wanted a production, announcing, television, and radio news resume tape. I am still all about all these tasks. I am shooting a television package on Friday at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle. A priest who is also a musician travels the world putting on concerts and donating all the ticket sales to local charities in the area.

*I called my boss from my internship over the summer who is also a DJ on K-Rock and he told me he's do anything to help me. I called to tell him that I sent my stuff into K-Rock in case he was asked about it so he wasn't caught off gaurd. They are like a family there at Infinity and I love them! I would love so much to have the opportunity to work there.

*My fun and sarcastic morning show co-host Sebastian Driver Salazar and I have our morning show tomorrow "Driver in the Fast Lane" after last week's hiatus. We always have a good time and I plan on saving a lot of our talk breaks for a morning show resume tape because that would be my dream to be on a morning show and we ARE actually GOOD! We play very well off of each other and I've gotten great feedback about our show.

DANCE:

*Me and my other wonderful choreographer Pat Sandora are gearing up for dance team! They look great and we spent a lot of time on top of our busy schedules making up thier dance! It looks awesome and I'm really excited! The first game is November 19th! Come see them!

Will Howard Stern Make An Early Exit From Infinity?
While Sirius President/CEO Joe Clayton said this morning during his company's Q3 earnings conference call that he'd be open to negotiating a deal to bring Stern to Sirius before his scheduled January 2006 arrival, Clayton doesn't expect Infinity to let the WXRK/New York syndicated morning host leave just yet. "His ratings are now higher than they've been at any time, and I don't think Infinity is going to walk away from that advertising revenue," Clayton said. "Infinity could chase him off the air, which I find highly unlikely, or they could just let him go on as is throughout the 2005 time period." However, Clayton added, "If it's in the benefit of Howard Stern, Infinity, and Sirius, if something could be worked out earlier, that is a possibility as well. But there are a lot of different moving parts, and its difficult to comment."

This WEEK:

This week is fall break for my college, but it's never a break for me. At the beginning of the week, I had to make sure things were in check for the break to come with the sceduling with my DJ's. I did a lot of voice tracking this week to cover for shifts. I scheduled for the rest of the week and had a music committee meeting to make sure everything would be done before everyone left. I did get a little break, which I'll explain more about. I also had to board op the football game today, and I have to go to Froggy tonight!

ELMIRA, NEW YORK!
My friend, as I mentioned in prior blogs, landed a job as a reporter in Elmira New York at WENY. She has lived in Pennsylvania all her life and this is a HUGE step for her. She was overwhelmed, but excited. I wanted to be a good friend and ease her mind a little, so I offered to help her apartment hunt for a day. I went there this week and the town was very quaint, but very cute. It was really nice. We found a wonderful apartment for her within an hour! The best part was that the real estate agent showed us all these great local places to eat for dinner and when we went back to find them, it was impossible, so we decided to go to Pizza Hut because that was thew only thing we could find. When we were eating dinner I asked the waiter for a phone book, so I could see what radio stations were in Elmira. I didn't feel like writing all these numbers down, so I ripped out the page in the phone book when no one was looking. So, needless to say, I probably have some Pizza Hut employees after me. We drove past WENY and it was 2 buildings and they were small, but it seemed as though the environment was really nice. I'm very prpud of Melissa! She's actually doing what she's aspired to do with her career! She's really moving up! So, many miles and mixed tapes later, we went home and the next day, I finally got to send out my K-Rock demo to Infinity that I had been working on for 3 weeks! Since I was already going to go to the post office to send out resumes, I thought I'd check out the ripped phone book page of radio stations. I found this one radio station that didn't have a website, so I decided to call their phone number. A very polite and enthusiastc man answered the phone and I asked if they had a website. He said they did not have an active one. Since most people that answer the phones at stations are receptionists, I asked if he knew if they had any on-air openings. The guy said, "Yes, I do." I said "Oh, YOU do?" In disbelief, he told me that he was the General Manager and he had an opening for a female at an AC station. He was really nice and really pleasant. He gave me a good vibe about the station. He also somehow started talking to me about how he had a pet rabbit and I should get one. Anyway, it seemed nice and I though, why not and why wait? So, I applied for that job too. I'll keep everyone posted about what happens. It was a fun and worth while trip!

"Viacom Loses Cross-Ownership Appeal"
The Third Circuit Court of Appeals has denied the company's petition asking that the stay on implementation of the FCC's new radio-TV cross-ownership rules be lifted. Industry watchers expected the denial, given that the court has remanded the FCC's numerical station ownership limits for further justification. Earlier this year the court granted an FCC motion seeking authority to enact its new Arbitron-based radio-market-definition rules.

I actually have a question in reguard to this article...What do you think about the FCC's new radio-TV-cross ownership rules? Do you think it's a good idea? Do you think it will help the radio industry? Do you think it will hurt the radio industry?

I think it will help because owners will do all they can to make their ratings great and the radio station would have a lot of easy promotion with the same company owning programs or stations of Television.

This week:

I listened to almost all the airchecks and most of my on-air personalities know what their doing, but I typed out notes for them and critiqued. They all said the notes were helpful so that is good. Feedback as a Program Director helps because I want the station to sound the best it can without being mean. I think this really helped everyone! I was pleasently suprised by the morning shows! They were all wonderful and they can only improve!

I started to make a K-Rock demo because I went to visit the people at my internship last Friday and they told me that there was still a position open at K-Rock and that I should apply. That meant a lot because I felt like the people at Infinity wanted me to work with them! I called the Promotions Director to see if there was anything I could talk about in my demo that was going on currently and she told me a few things that I hope helps my demo. I also checked the rock charts to see what music was topping the charts that I could play the tail end or intro in my demo. It's going good, it's just a long process. I'll keep you posted when it is finished and ready to send out!

I sent out my materials to a program director/announcer job in Virginia. The job was posted on all access and I applied via e-mail and they contacted me to send them my materials, so I got that sent out promptly on Tuesday.

I was invited to present in front of a Faculty Luncheon about music and society and how music impacts us today. It was very interesting and the crowd participated heavily, which was great! It made me feel like thye were really interested in the subject!

I had 2 great newscasts this week! One on Monday and one on Thursday!

My friend Melissa Batulis snagged a job this week in Elmira New York at WENY as a reporter! Congratulations!

Bill O'Reilly Sues Over Alleged Extortion Scheme
The Fox News personality and Westwood One-syndicated radio talker has filed a lawsuit against a New York City attorney, the attorney's law firm and a Fox News employee for reportedly attempting to extort $60 million dollars from O'Reilly. According to papers filed in a Nassau County, NY court today, O'Reilly claims that attorney Benedict P. Morelli and a female employee of Fox News threatened to sue him for alleged sexual harassment of the woman unless the talk host agreed to pay a reported $60 million in hush money. In addition to the extortion lawsuit, O'Reilly is also seeking damages for intentional infliction of emotional distress and wrongful interference with contractual relations, saying that the employee and Morelli's accusations threatened to impair his reputation with his employer and the public. Although the damages sought by O'Reilly are unspecified, he told reporters that he would donate 100% of all monetary damages that he receives to charity.

*This should not happen. Watch out for extortion when you're in the business. I'm sure o'Reilly will be battling this for a long time to come! I'll keep you posted!

PRODUCTIVE WEEK

* This week has been very productive for me as a Program Director. I helped my on-air personalities technically on running the board.

Aircheck Week:
*I listened to all my disc jockey's tapes from Aircheck week and I think it helped a lot to see where they were with their skills. Some people I was amazed by and some people need to work on alot. Some people just need to tweek a couple of things. This is a valuable step as a program direcotr because you want you on-air staff to be at their best. I have to say, I was most impressed by the morning shows that I listened to. They all had great chemistry with their co-hosts. They had topical information, they had community bulletins. They were on top of it. These are times when a Program Director is very pleased and happy about the way things are going. I typed up notes for each of them and gave them back their notes. I felt good with the constructive criticism I gave. They can now work on these things for the next aircheck week I'll be having, but they should be airchecking themselves all the time!

NEWS:
*I produced the newscast this morning and there was some pressure to finish because some stories were falling through, but it all worked out great! I now do not feel pressured by dead lines unless something is really wrong! I know dead lines, I breath them everyday of my life, I live dead lines! So, bring them on!

Promotion:
*I want to to a "Family Day" Promotion. At least this is what I'll call it! I called up the local Pizza Joe's who listens to our station all the time, so they are always pleasant to work with. We are going to have people call in during the morning shows and they'll be the eighth caller and they win a slice of Pizza. Then all the winners from that week will get their names drawn in for the grand prize and we'll have some sort of trivia question and the winner that calls in first and answers correctly wins the BIG prize pack. It will be like 2 or 3 large pizzas and a bigger prize...hints...the family pack! I will make a promo that will run all that week for Pizza Joe's and I will have my DJ's read an on-air promo at least once an hour that week! It will be good. It's planned for the second week in November!

INFINITY:
*I'm going to visit the place of my internship tomorrow in Pittsburgh! I had a wonderful experience over the summer and I would love to work there when I'm finished with school! So, I am going to continuously keep in touch with them and send them my airchecks from Froggy! I worked with Star 100.7, K-Rock 93.7, and Y108.

MUSIC LUNCH PRESENTATION:
*I was invited to present at a lunch with important faculty on the Westminster campus about music and how music impacts people, etc. This happens next week, Oct. 14th! I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out!

Not a Howard Fan!
* This week, there was an article on the AP wire about Howard Stern leaving Infinity Broadcasting in 15 or so months to move to Sirius Sattellite radio. This means fans will have to pay to hear Howard Stern. He wanted to be free to say what he wanted without FCC regulators. He said on the air Tuesday morning that he is "getting a divorce" from Infinity Broadcasting. He'll reach every Market in the Country. As everyone know, I interned with Infinity Broadcasting over the summer and I was there when they changed there long runing top 40 B94 radio station to K-Rock just because they wanted Howard Stern since Clear Channel wouldn't take him back! Even though this recent change stinks for Infinity in Pittsburgh, I feel very knowledgable because when it happened, I thought that the last think Pittsburgh needed was another Rock station. They needed to create an Oldies station and go up against Clear Channel's Oldies Station, 3WS on 94.5FM. I think this would have been more successful instead of going up against the 3 rock stations already in Pittsburgh. Now, with K-Rock, there are four. We'll see what happens with the ratings at K-Rock. I say NO to Howard Stern!

This week:
* I conducted aircheck week this week as part of my position as Program Director. This will give me a chance to listen to and critique and help the on-air personalities improve on their on air skills. I'm excited about listening to all of them.

*I helped shoot, edit and reported a television package this week. I have primarily taken myself out of tv, but I like to do packages occasionally. I did a package on the dress code in a public school, or Wilmington High school. The interview was good, but I had to rush around to get all the shots in that I wanted for my package. It aired on our News magazine, "The County Line." I enjoyed the switch from radio to tv for a brief moment.

*This was a huge week at Froggy for me. I have to admit that I am worn out, but I love this business and I will do anything to get ahead! I worked the midnight to 5 shift twice this week and I'm going to be on Saturday night from 7 to midnight. I will be on Saturday 7 to midnight for the rest of October. Sounds good to me! A prime shift in a #23 Market!

*I have my morning show on Friday! Sebastian agreed to cook Karen Waldo and I dinner since on our morning show "Driver in the Fast Lane" last week he said women should always cook dinner. We had a little contest and if a women called in first, he had to cook me and the winner dinner. He hasn't done it yet, but it sure will be something to talk about on our show. I love our morning show! This is something I would absolutely LOVE to do when I graduate. Stations are largely identified by their morning shows and I would love to be a part of that!

*I have my presentation in capstone and I will be talking about my internship experience.

*The Dean of Student Affairs contacted me about conducting a lead seminar about music and radio in our culture today with officials, faculty, and students. This is happening on October 14th at 11:35AM. I will keep my blog updated with more information!

*The NAB will "probably prevail" again in preventing further regulation of broadcasting, Sen. JOHN McCAIN (R-AZ) said after the TUESDAY SENATE COMMERCE COMMITTEE hearing on media ownership consolidation.
McCAIN's resignation to a lack of major rollbacks to the FCC's ownership rules came after testimony by several speakers from the academic world, including PENN law professor C. EDWIN BAKER, who called restrictions on media ownership "vitally important to democracy" and advocated taking ownership out of the hands of large companies.
On the other hand, argued CATO INSTITUTE Dir./Telecommunications Studies ADAM THIERER, the explosion of alternate media sources via cable, satellite, and the Internet mean that concentration of broadcast ownership has had less effect on public choices. McCAIN said he would not "give up the fight" because at some point, the public will "be disturbed by the situation."

*I agree with the fact that ownership has had less effect on public choices. With advanced technology, broadcast ownership seems not to affect the public anymore. I also think though that ownership out of the hands of large companies could be a good thing. We migth begin to hear the radio and watch television and see some new things.

Senior Project Proposal

I believe there are many things that I can do with my career. I do have goals, but if something comes up that I may really enjoy, my goals may change. I love radio the most, but if I had an opportunity to be a feature reporter or a morning co-host on a talk show like Kelly with Regis, I would love that as well. I also have a lot of plans to move up executively. My drive is in music and radio, but I would do the news if I had to.

I want to work on programming, promotion, production, producing, television reporting, and radio news, and my talent skills as an announcer.

Announcer/ On-air personality/ Morning show host

Perform my on-air shifts as a professional. Make my on-air personality conversational for the audience to relate to by being enthusiastic, informative, and entertaining.
I will air check all my shifts here and at Froggy to get them ready for resume tapes.Gather and prepare a compelling, clean, attention grabbing resume tape, compiling my best moments as an on-air personality to apply for and submit to commercial stations for full time positions.
Create a separate resume tape specifically to apply for morning show positions as a co-host to submit to radio stations.Prepare my tapes for this semester seeing as I want to apply for jobs as soon as possible.

Producing/Production

Produce at least 2 promo spots that are exciting and that grab the audience attention.Complete my promos this semester to have done for a production resume tape sometime during this semester to apply for any production job.Create these spots using other tactics than my voice. I may use others voices, sound effects, a special idea, nat sound, etc.

Promotion

Create 2 large events that either interest the audience or benefit the community or some organization. Will create through local businesses, or some public service organizations.Will join the event with promo spots and on-air promos for the Disk Jockeys to read.

Perform my radio news shifts with enthusiasm and appropriate mood to the story.
Create, produce, report, anchor, and write good scripts for at least 2 topical, compelling newscasts this semester.
Complete radio news resume this semester to submit to stations for full time jobs after graduation.

Programming

Conduct a management position with enthusiasm, determination, and communication.Searching and paying attention to what other radio stations are doing that have the same format and to other radio stations in general to see what the audience reacts to.
Get ideas for Titan Radio by being knowledgeable about the radio industry and the music that works for the HOT AC format.Communicate and be professional about dealing with staff members. Make sure people respect me as a leader, but also know that I will be available at all times to help the staff solve any problems they may have.
Make sure the radio station runs smoothly with new and fresh music, good knowledgeable disk jockeys that are technically advanced as well as advanced on the air.Help new people become more confident on the air through training on the board and being in front of the microphone.Making sure all the promotional spots are up to date and topical.
Critique on-air personalities through air check weeks.Make sure my Program Director position is clearly defined on my paper resume to show that I can take on a lot of responsibility. It should grab the attention of the employer when applying for jobs as a music director or program director.

MORNING SHOW CRAZINESS!

MORNING SHOW:
Sebastian Driver Salazar and myself have a morning show every Friday that we ever so cleverly named "Driver in the Fast Lane." My last name is Lane and his is Driver, so it works! We have centered our morning show around relationships and how they work and we have battle of the sexes every week. We work very well together and we play off of each other. I think that is the success of our morning show so far. We've had some great feedback! All the morning shows run Monday through Friday from 7AM to 10AM.

WHAT I DID THIS WEEK:
This has been a busy week, but what's new? I say that every week! I produced reported and anchored the newscasts at 4 and 5 on Monday. I had my fun radio shift on Monday, which was wonderful. That is where I love to be, playing music and relating to the audience. I trained a new on air personality this week. I made a promo for the weekly Westminster College news magazine through our saw editing program. I loaded in and scheduled music this week. The biggest event that happened this week was that we got our new computer! We have two production studios and our master control studio. We were using one of the studios as a back up, so we were down to one production room! It has been chaos for about a month. But, we got the new computer this week and everything in the station is running great! I loaded in new music and new promos, it was wonderful! The best part about the whole ordeal was that the audience never knew that we were having problems and that is a HUGE lesson in radio and broadcasting in general. Never let the audience know there is something wrong! I had a music meeting this week and next week as the Program Director I am starting Aircheck week! I had an e-mail from a job prospect in Maryland. I'll keep everyone updated on that!

OH NO BRITNEY AND JANET:
Two ladies that always seem to be in the headlines were there again this week! Janet had the largest fine ever from the FCC if everything follows through with her exposed breast at last year's Superbowl. Britney is married again, but it's not legal yet. She's always pulling stunts to make news. I know people either love her or hate her, but you can't help but be intigued by her.

Long week this week, but that's good! The program director from Froggy called and he wants to get me more hours, so I'm on two week days this week! My Career Goals

SHORT AND LONG TERM!

SHORT TERM:

I want to create dynamic attention grabbing resume tapes. I want resume tapes that include one for announcing, one for radio news, and on for tv packages, and one for production skills. I want to excel in my Titan Radio program director position as much as possible. I want take advantage of all my resources while I can. I can do everything here at Westminster and I will only be performing one certain job when I get out of college. I want to do really well at Froggy, so that could possibly turn into a full time job upon graduation. I want to meet people and network with those in the business. I want to be in Virgnia or someplace warm, or I would love to stay in Pittsburgh. In an ADI 23 right now part time. I would like to be on air in a top 30 Market upon graduation.

LONG TERM:

In the long run, I really have a strong desire to become an executive. I like being a leader and I think I am a good leader. As long as I am knowledgable and confident, I can make the station I'm in charge of have the same feel. When I graduate, I want to be on the air full time, then I want to move up to being an on-air personality as well as a Program Director or Music Director. One Day, I want to be the Vice President of a Broadcasting Corporation. I love Infinity Broadcasting. I would love to be the Vice President of that corporation. I will work as hard as I can and I will always be on the lookout for jobs in fields that I want. I have no problem moving around and relocating to get the job I've always longed for. I would love to work in a CHR Pop format in a top 20 ADI. I am a competitive person and I want to end up in New York in the # 1 Market! I want sastisfaction and happiness in my job. I could love this business, but the day I stop loving means I'm working at the wrong station because there is no way I could lose my drive to strive for an executive position in the radio industry. I also want to make sure I enjoy the little things about my jobs on the way up because if I'm happy somewhere, maybe my long term goal will change. I'll see on my way up the ladder!

JOB SEARCHING ALWAYS!

I started hardcore job searching this week! I applied for 8 jobs this week that ranged from Program Director positions to Music Director Positions, to on-air positions! All of them suit me well! I know it's early to apply for jobs since I don't graduate until May, but I don't want to get behind or to lose momentum. If there is a job posted and it looks good....I'm going for it! So watch out radio industry....Here I come! This process was done on my own time this week, which was difficult, but I did complete it and got everything sent out today!

LEADER ON CAMPUS!

I was invited to a dinner among leader's on the Westminster campus with the President of the college. There were many "Presidents" there. It was an honor to be invited though. I'm finding the certain privleges that come with being program director quite nice! That goes without saying that I've worked very hard to get this position and to have these perks!

Reguardless of the "perks" I still have a very strong work ethic. I've been raised to be that way! I just realized this week how much I'm like my Dad when it comes to work. We both love our jobs, but we work hard to get what we want! Go Lane family!

THIS WEEK!

This week I applied myself more towards my Program Director duties, but I still had my News reporter duties as well! I am really enjoying my Broadcast Journalism class because it's hands on, doing what we're learning, without lectures and power points. I think that is the best way to learn in this business.

I wrote and produced newscasts this week. I wrote and got sound for a lot of stories about possible flooding from Hurricane Ivan because we are supposed to get a lot of rain. The meteorologists at the National Weather Service are my new best friends. I think I've called them about 10 times since last week!

In programming we had our first Music committee meeting this week and it went very well! I want to stay up to date with music since that is our main sell for Titan Radio! We are the only Hot AC station around and we are the only station that plays commercial free music!

I updated the on-air shift schedule as fellow program directors know that can be a hassle. It'll probably change again next week, but I'll stay on top of it! I've been listening to the DJ's and I've made some critiques, but everyone is still getting the hang of it!

Soon I am having an Aircheck week meaning everyone has to aircheck their shift that week and give it to me and I will critique it via e-mail. I am going to pick these weeks at random to make sure people don't slack off.

I have been approached by the Dean of Student Affairs to talk at a Lead Luncheon. I am going to talk about the different genres of music and why different demographics tend to listen to certain genres of music. This will take place on October 14th and it'll be very interesting. Outsiders of the community are welcome to come. I will keep you updated!

I had my on-air shifts this week, which I LOVE having! I get to have my own on-air personality and I am comfortable with being on the air!

TV!

I don't very often get to watch tv other than the news because I am always listening to the radio, but I taped the Apprectice this evening and I'm excited to watch it! I love it when Donald fires people! I really respect Donald Trump as a Business Man!

I'M A NEWS REPORTER TOO!

This was a fun and different week for me in the broadcast realm og things. I still attended to my duties as Program Director, but this was the week for NEWS for me!

I produced, reported, and anchored the newscast at 4PM on Monday, did the same for 7,8,and 9 Tuesday morning, and I went out to do a live report that day as well! I also helped multiple people prepare their newscasts and work the equipment since this was the first week for news..some people needed help, but all of us Seniors and our great News Director Megan Marshall helped the "newbies" to make some great newscasts.

CHRIS HEINZ AND AP!

On Tuesday, we recieved a Press release about the fact that Chris Heinz the stepson of John Kerry was going to be at nearby Slippery Rock University for a rally to get college students to register to vote.

I was eager to take on this task! I went with my professor, Bradley Weaver and I recorded everything I could and I recieved multiple usable soundbites from both Chris Heinz and the Pennsylvania State representative Frank LaGrotta. They were both very passionate and it was thrilling to be at this event. I did a live report from the rally and I came back to the station and cut 2 stories to run for newscasts later that day! What was even more thrilling was that Mr. Weaver sent my stories into the Associated Press and they took it! My Chris Heinz story appeared on the AP wire at 1:36AM and I got credit for it! This made me enjoy reporting! I love going out and being with people! The Slippery Rock Paper took a picture of me with Chris Heinz and it will be on their front page this Friday! Their paper is called "The Rocket." I realized that I might like doing news too. I may not have as much of a love for it as I do announcing and being on the air as an on-air personality, but I do love it too! It's quite a rush!

Melissa is a friend of mine that is an assistant producer at WTAE, channel 4 in Pittsburgh! She is also a Westminster Alumni and it's her birthday on Saturday! She'll be 24! We're going to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner and to the Southside for some fun and dancing!

FROGGY

Last night was my first night at Froggy 98.3 in Pittsburgh!

Over the summer, I sent my resume and tape into Froggy after seeing a post online that they needed part time weekend people. At the time, I was interning with Y108 and Froggy is Y108's biggest competitor. I sent my stuff in on a Thursday, it probably got there by Friday and to my SUPRISE, the Program Director, Jimmy Hoppa called me on Monday!

*I am doing over nights there on Saturdays and he said he would move me up to daytime if I sounded good on the air. He said he really liked my resume tape and that is why he hired me! This made me very excited and happy!

*I trained last night and it was a little overwhelming because commcercial radio is a lot different from Titan radio, but the concepts were the same. I learned pretty quickly. Annephibian trained me and she was very patient and helpful.

*I learned the Maestro system and it was very interesting.

*I then found out that I am put on network hours meaning I am on all 4 Froggy stations at the same time! I'm ready to jump right in though.

*I have to say I am proud of myself. I created my resume and resume tape to cater to the job, I sent it out, I got a call, and I followed through! I'm on the air in Pittsburgh, a #23 market at a 4th ranked station! This is awesome!

*I love this business! I think my name is going to be Betty Croaker, but that is not certain yet! Listen for me on Saturday nights starting at midnight! I would appreciate it! I'll be on 94.9, 103.5, 104.3, and 98.3! Call me while I'm there on the studio line 1-866-983-9898. I'll keep you updated on my ventures at Froggy!

FIRST WEEK FOR EVERYTHING!

Wow! This has been a crazy, but exciting week! Everyone came back to school this week and as the Program Director for Titan Radio, a lot had to be done! And here's what I did....

1) I had to first make a Mandatory Meeting for all the students that wanted to be DJ's and have a shift on the first day of school. I set this up and communicated this through e-mail.

2) I made sheets and guidelines for the DJ's to follow. Everyone seemed really enthusiastic to get back in gear and get back on the air.

3) I had a meeting with just the Morning show personalities as well this week. They have all had great morning shows so far! This makes me a VERY HAPPY Program Director!

4) Everyone was on the air the first day of school and it has been a very long time since that has happened. We usually wait a couple weeks until we start shifts! This also made me happy!

5) All the morning shows and shifts have been great. I just need the newer DJ's to focus on giving information that pertains to the whole listening audience and not just the campus listening audience.

I have worked myself very hard this week, but I'm not complaining. Everybody needs my advice and my help and that's good. I feel I am advancing in my leadership skills as a Program Director.

I definately want to become a Director of some sort, whether it be music director or program director, or eventually VP of Programming later. I still have a strong passion for announcing as well! We'll see what this upcoming week has to bring! I'm sure it'll be full of excitement just like every other week!

I MISS IT ALREADY!

*A couple of weeks ago, I had my last remote and day with my internship. It was a sad day, but it was well worth while.

*Over the summer I was not only here running Titan Radio, I ventured to Pittsburgh 3 and sometimes 5 days a week to Pittsburgh for the opportunity of an internship with Infinity Broadcasting. Infinity Broadcasting owns Star 100.7, Y108, and what is the new K-Rock.

WHAT DID I DO THERE?

* I went to multiple and when I see multiple...(I mean a crap load) of remotes. I went to remotes that were fun and exciting and some that were not so fun and exciting. I went to boring ones for Shop N Save and car dealerships to fun ones like concerts. There were many times when I worked about the ENTIRE weekend. For example, when B93-7 was still in business...I had to do remotes with them from, 9 in the morning on Saturday all day long, then I had to go with them to do the Saturday Night Shout Out Party at the Matrix in Station Sqaure. I didn't get home til 4 in the morning and I had to get back up at 7AM and venture back to the Burgh for the Hot Country Jam concert to work another 12 to 16 hour day! YEAH! I'd say that's tiring, but I'm not complaining cause it was well worth it. I realized how much I love this business especially working for a real commercial station. I LOVE THIS BUSINESS! Because I love it, I was willing to work whenever for Infinity and for Titan Radio for that matter.

*The long hours also had it's perks though. I got to meet multiple stars like, Montgomery Gentry, Joe Diffie, Mark Chesnutt, SheDaisy, Barnaked Ladies, Keith Urban, Dierks Bently, Brooks N Dunn, Marron 5, and John Mayor just to name a few :)

* I also sat in and helped board op and shadow and train on the air with DJ's such as Melanie Taylor (B93-7), Dave Cook (K-Rock), Tracy Morgan (Y108), and of course someone that has a past with Westminster himself Johnny Hartwell (Star 100.7). I also had a chance to be on the air with the B93-7 morning show. My picture was on the B93.7 website with Melanie Taylor and a "shadower."

* What I found from all these people was that they are willing to help you and they WANT to help you because they know it's hard. I did a lot of networking and made a lot of contacts. These people not only were mentors, but they became my friends too which made the atmosphere at work that muck more pleasant.

*I also helped write some 30 and 60 second commercials for the Howard Stern morning show.

* I also worked in Production and helped put in my advice creatively.

* I also made an effort and took advantage of this opportunity! I know I want to be on the air one day. My ultimate goal is to be part of a morning show. So, I brought everyone and I mean everyone my air checks from Titan Radio. I got feedback from all the program directors, the DJ's, and even some Promotion Directors. I took feedback and advice where I could get it because I want to be the best I could be!

* Something else that came to my attention was that I, out of 15 other interns was selected and trusted the most to handle things because they knew I was dependable and reliable. There were interns from Clarion, IUP, WVU, and I was the only one from Westminster. When they would use radio lingo, I knew what they were talking about and the rest of the interns didn't. This made me realize how valuable my experience at Westminster has been and it's not even over yet!

* I got good advice and feedback on my air checks. I can't say enough about my wonderful experience with Infinty Broadcasting in Pittsburgh! I love all of those people, they became a family to me and I will miss them and the experience I had! They only helped me to LOVE the business even more and helped me move on to the next chapter in my life..which is finding a job!

* They did a pretty good job of this because I have a weekend position at Froggy in Pittsburgh on the air!!! A number 23 market and I'm still in College! I'm on my way I guess! And I won't stop here! There's more to come!

LOTS HAS HAPPENED

A lot has happened since I last placed a post on here. This is what happened first.....

ARTS AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL:

We broadcasted live and did a live remote from the 2nd Annual New Wilmington Arts and Heritage Festival the first weekend in August. Chuck and Amy Dalbon cleaned out the Cable 9 truck and we were placed in front of the physical plant. We gave some thrilling and exciting tours of the truck. The plan was to show people in the community how live broadcasts go out over the air into what they see on television. I made promos in the production room, on-air promos, and I scheduled the summer Titan Radio staff so that everyone would have at least one day off during the 3 day event (August 6th -August 8th). Everyone got a day off except of course ME! But, the I do what I have to and want to do! It is always a must to print out the log for the hours you will be on a remote because the board operator has to throw it down to the DJ's, and end with the DJ's. I printed the log for all three days and scheduled when every talk break and every interview would be. Of course, things were adjusted and changed a little as the remote went on. I met cloggers and interviewed the mayor of New Wilmington, the Humane Society, the New Castle playhouse mini-stars, a doctor that creates and sells Marshmallow blow guns, a traveling Gospel choir, and many more. The interviews were fun to do. It is important with our new coverage that we make appearances at local events and this one was perfect and easy to do live with the marti becasue it was right on Market Street! Everyone did a great job, and it sounded fun and professional. I also met a lot of people that said how much they enjoy the station and that they listen all the time! This made me extremely excited and happy. So all the DJ's that come back for the school year need to remember that they should always give their shift the best they can give cause people are listening. I'm not very good with the whole placing pictures on here yet, but Pat has pictures from the festival on his blog. They are very cute and I'll try to put mine on here soon!

I also finished my internship this past week and I did interviews and a delayed broadcast from the Lawrence County Fair. I will go into more detail on my next blog...

This week has been fun and crazy! I've set up a local radio remote for our radio station, Titan Radio, Digital 88.9FM. A lot of people want to be involved in making decisions. I made promos to be autimatically placed in Selector, and I have made promos to be read on the air. I have travelled around to local businesses to see what they can donate for prizes. We are going to play pool games and the winners of the pool games will win prizes. We're also handing out popscicles that day. We are doing 4 drops an hour for 2 hours during the remote. Out of each drop, we will play a beach song.

I have also helped our News Director who needed help with voicers by giving her my voice.

I have also done my weekly duties stating on top of pop culture and entertainment news to have some information for my on-air shifts. I have also changed the music based on the Hot AC format as I do every week.

I have also been helping and participating in remotes and promotional events at my internship in Pittsbrugh with Infinity Broadcasting.

I have recently been looking for a part-time on-air job for the school year.
